This is Harris and Emberly's first book on children's sexuality, followed by "It's So Amazing." "Normal" is a good offering for kids who need a basic introduction to sexuality in general, gender differences, and conception, while "Amazing" goes more in-depth on conception, relationships, and several other topics."Normal" might be a bit much for less experienced readers, but that's OK -- I recommend that parents pre-read their kids' books, anyway, and this would be a good one to read together, at least at first. One amusing, yet very helpful, feature is the presence of two cartoon characters -- a bird and bee (of course!) -- who act as sort of a "Greek chorus" to the text. They provide commentary and ask questions many kids may have, but feel to embarrassed to voice. One character is excited about learning and asking; the other just wants the whole subject to go away -- until. that is, *he* has a question he would like answered! This is one of my favorite things about the book. It may appear to be simple comic relief, but it is a useful mechanism to reassure kids, and get them to open up a bit to a subject which can be sometimes overwhelming and hard to believe. In my opinion, this is a "must have" book for any family with a pre-teen.
Harris and Emberley have done it again! "It's So Amazing!" is a much-needed follow up to their prior book, "It's Perfectly Normal."The text is clear, while maybe a little advanced for the younger solo reader -- this would be a good one for parents and kids to read together at first. Numerous captions and illustrations help children understand the material more fully, and are entertaining, to boot. The bird and bee characters are back, too, speaking many of the feelings, doubts, and questions real kids may have when mulling over the information. They provide some comic relief, but their function as a sounding board is more important than many people realize. This can be confusing (and hard to believe) stuff. There is much more in-depth material on the actual mechanics of reproduction and birth than in "Normal," but it is nicely balanced by the sections on how families are formed, how families relate to and love each other, and what makes each person unique. This would make a perfect teaching tool for a kid who has a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology, but is ready for some behind-the-scenes details as to how babies are created, and how they grow into children who then grow into adults -- and start the whole process over!
I hardly know where to start in praising this book! The writing is very frank, and may provide more than some parents wish their kids to know at this stage. The drawings are cartoonish, but still realistic enough to make sense and appeal to kids. Two friends, a bird and a bee, appear on every page to make comments on the text, and provide every reader with someone to identify with - the bird is excited about growing up, while the bee is embarrassed and not as interested. Boys and girls will appreciate knowing that they are learning the same stuff (there aren't two copies for either gender). Just about every topic is addressed, if briefly: reproduction, homosexuality, physiology, menstruation, erections and ejaculation, changes in body shape and smell, changes in emotions, masturbation, families and pregnancy, birth control/family planning, sexual abuse, STD's and AIDS - everything! The best part, though, is the two page spread of drawings of different types of naked bodies: fat, thin, tall, all colors, all ages, even people in wheelchairs. These two pages alone are worth the price of the book.
This is a great book for parents and can be for children. Its specific information that will make an awkward time easier, however, the text is very dry and may require some translation for younger children. I bought it for my 9 year old and was really impressed, but it needs to be screened because not all the sections are appropriate for any age. As always - work with your child, explain it to them and use this book as your guide.
What subject other than human sexuality and reproduction can cause so much uproar? This book offers a way for parents to give all the available information on growing and changing, without the embarassment kids, and parents!, often feel. The author presents answers to questions that a parent might never think their child wants to know, but they probably do!! As well as answers many parents didn't even know!! The drawings are exceptional in detail but do not come across as vulgar. This book is perfect for any household with children. I have 5, and the book is left out for them to use and share at thir own discretion. When offered in an open and caring atmosphere, this helps to make sexuality a family subject, and not taboo. And when information is shared with the family children will grow up with a healthy respect and understanding for their bodies and their minds.
This book is so explicit that its text and illustrations are often vulgar. Its information is driven by the author's obvious political goal of promoting homosexuality, masturbation, and abortion; all with graphic illustrations and instructions, such as masturbation with a pillow, statements that the ancient Greeks believed that the love between two men was the "highest form of love," (What about Platonic love espoused by ancient Greek philosophers?). The book promotes sex by repeating that it feels "good," "tingly," "warm," and "exciting." The book fails to mention anything about responsibility or the necessity of sex occurring only in an adult, committed relationship. It also does not mention the emotional results and emotional damage done to a child who engages in early sex. In summary, this book sends the wrong message to children: if it feels good, DO IT!
